The terms "hardscapes" and "softscapes" are used to differentiate the elements within your landscape. The hardscape consists of the solid components such as retaining walls, driveways, walkways, patios, stone structures and any other permanent structure that provides form or function within the overall design. Softscape refers to green spaces, such as plants, shrubs, trees and grass areas. Its important that the two stay in harmony throughout the design process. The hardscape is completed before the softscape is designed.
